Roni Linser talks about rule based RPSs (chess, football; abstract rules and roles, specific objectives) vs. role based simulations (murder mystery, RPS; social rules/specific roles, abstract objectives) and about the level of immersion depending on what kind of simulation it was. The combination of open-ended objectives, structured but flexible rules, specific roles worked. The alternative — specific objectives, highly structures rules and abstract roles — worked less well.
